Tunisian Islamist chief Ghannouchi detained amid tensions Lalrp

TUNIS, Tunisia — Influential Tunisian Islamist chief Rached Ghannouchi was detained Monday after a police search, in keeping with his lawyer.

The transfer towards the 81-year-old former parliament speaker comes amid rising social tensions and deepening financial troubles in Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring pro-democracy motion greater than a decade in the past.

Ghannouchi, head of the Ennahdha get together, is probably the most distinguished critic of Tunisian President Kais Saied.

Ennahdha introduced on Twitter that Ghannouchi had been ″taken from his residence″ after a police search and stated it “condemns this very harmful improvement.” His lawyer Nejib Chebbi advised The Related Press that Ghannouchi was detained.

The explanation for the detention was not made public. Tunisian media reported that Ghannouchi was to be questioned over a video circulating on-line by which he purportedly warns of civil struggle.

Ghannouchi has been detained up to now for questioning on suspicion of cash laundering and terrorism financing by means of a charity. He has denied wrongdoing and his get together says the accusations are politically pushed.

Saied shut down the Ennahdha-led parliament in 2021 and has since moved to consolidate energy amid rising public disillusionment with Tunisia’s democracy.
